BigPond Movies on Samsung TV 3D

6 April 2011 – A growing number of Australian homes can say goodbye to late fees with BigPond Movies now bringing a virtual movie store to Samsung TVs, Blu-ray players and Home Theatre systems.

The launch of BigPond Movies on Samsung internet enabled devices means a range of New Release, High Definition and award winning Australian titles can be viewed through compatible Samsung televisions. The library available on Samsung devices is also set to grow to more than 2000 titles in the coming months.

BigPond Movies extends Telstra’s IPTV service on Samsung. The existing BigPond TV service on Samsung provides seven streamed channels including 24/7 news, sports and music videos, as well as the NRL Game Analyser. Telstra will also launch the new AFL Game Analyser service later this year. All content is unmetered for most BigPond broadband customers.

“BigPond Movies has fast become a welcome addition to Australian homes and this partnership with Samsung means we can bring the latest movies and TV shows to even more families,” Telstra’s Director of IPTV, Pay TV and T-Box, Ben Kinealy, said.

“With automatic rental periods and the ability to browse through a variety of titles ranging from the latest TV shows to Hollywood classics, BigPond Movies really is bringing the DVD store to living rooms across the country,” Mr Kinealy added.

Samsung Electronics Australia’s CE Group Product Manager, Brad Wright, said: “As we launch our 2011 range of SMART TVs, we’re also excited to expand the range of content available to our customers through this partnership with Telstra.”

“Samsung has been delivering BigPond TV on selected products since September 2010. Following the success of BigPond TV, we are thrilled to extend our partnership to include content from BigPond Movies,” Mr Wright said.

The Hobbit casting roundup: Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Elijah Wood casted in

Peter Jackson’s very anticipated (and somewhat troubled) production The Hobbit is coming along nicely: they finally signed on Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum/Smeagol) and Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins) to reprise their characters in the two part prequel of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
There are rumors also about negotiations to get Christopher Lee (it’s amazing he’s still alive to make it into this movie), Iam Holm (he played Bilbo Baggins in LOTR), Hugo Weaving (Elrod) and Orlando Bloom (Legolas). But there’s no confirmation yet about them.
Filming is set for next month in New Zealand.

Pixar’s upcoming movie Brave plot revealed

Not much is known story-wise about the upcoming Pixar-Disney production entitled ‘Brave’. We got our first look of this movie some months ago with a teaser that was attached to Cars 2 and a poster.
But now, thanks to PixarPlanet.com, we can finally see what the story is all about:

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Tron 3 a done deal? Bruce Boxleitner says so

After Tron: Legacy, the sequel to cult-favorite 1982 film Tron, there was incertitude about Disney willing to continue the franchise by looking at the box-office numbers. However there were a couple of news regarding hired screenwriters and such, but announcements have been quiet for some months.
Last D23 expo, a fan asked Bruce Boxleitner (who played Tron in the two movies) about the sequel to Tron Legacy. His answer was a resounding ‘yes’. The movie is a done deal according to him and the plan is to make it for release by 2014. What we don’t know is if ‘Tron: Legacy’ director Joseph Kosinski is willing to do another entry since he’s busy with other projects.
We’ll have to wait a little more about more news regarding this project.

Top Gun getting a 3D conversion

THR reported that Paramount is preparing a 3D conversion of Tony Scott’s 1986 film Top Gun.
Legend3D is the company doing the conversion, who has already converted high profiled movies before, such as Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Smurfs among others
Here’s what Legend3D’s CEO Rob Hummel has to say about the upcoming release:

“As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I known they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward”

And about the 3D benefits for this project:

I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight. You can have fun with 3D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen."

Monster Inc, Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid releasing on theaters in 3D

After the limited release of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King 3D on theaters in August, Disney just announced a new line-up of remastered classics in 3D set for release on theaters venues in the States starting next year.
It will begin on January 13, 2012 with Beauty and the Beast, the first animated film that was converted in 3D by Disney, thanks mostly because of the CAPS system, as explained before on this very blog.
After that, Pixar’s classics will start to show up with the re-release of 2003 ‘Finding Nemo’ set for September of that same year and Monster’s Inc for January 18, 2013 (which will be a nice companion for the prequel named ‘Monsters University’ that is set also for release that same year, but on June 21)
And last, but not least, The Little Mermaid will get its 3D rerelease on September 13 of 2013.
So there you have it, we have a nice amount of Disney/Pixar goodness coming soon into theaters and they will be a nice present for our younger generations who will have the chance to discover these films, remastered in 3D, of course.

The Avengers teaser trailer

The official trailer of Marvel’s “The Avengers” is finally online.
This epic movie reunites big heroes from the Marvel universe such as Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, among others.
Joss Whedon is directing this movie with an all-star cast composed of: Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson.

Despicable Me 3D Blu-Ray release date

Unversal’s Despicable Me will get a blu-ray release in 3D on December 14. It will launch with the standard 2D version
The movie, animated by French animation studio Illumination Entertainment, tells the story of a super villain, Gru (voiced by Steve Carell)  who tries to shrink the moon, but can’t manage to get a bank loan to do his evil plan, so he tries to steal a powerful shrinkable gun with the help of 3 little orphan girls, but then something happens…
The movie was pretty fun, and it did pretty well with the audience. I didn’t saw it in 3D, but I’m curious to see how well it works. Can’t wait to check it out.

Warner Bros converting all the Harry Potter franchise in 3D

So, after the recent announcement that the first part of Deathly Hallows will not be converted, Warner Bros just said to Variety that they hired Prime Focus to convert 2 back titles: “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”. The have already started working on “Half-Blood Prince”
Prime Focus was the company also responsible for the rushed 3D conversion job of “Clash of the Titans” (which we know what are the results)… But now they’re trying to save their faces by producing more high quality conversion. We hope so.
Those Harry Potter 3D conversions will be released in blu-ray 3D format maybe end of next year.

Alice in Wonderland 3D blu-ray combo coming out tomorrow

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland 3D is coming out tomorrow on 3D blu-ray with a special package including a regular DVD version, 2D blu-ray and a digital copy. Perfect for the holidays.
The regular blu-ray includes a lot of bonus content as “making of” material. Pretty cool to see how Burton’s twisted vision came to life.
I really enjoyed the movie, even if the 3D was post-converted, it looked just fine. Of course, Tim Burton should had filmed it with 3D native cameras, but they did a good job (unlike Clash of the Titans…).

“Beauty and the Best” and “The Lion King” being released in blu-ray 3D

After being teased by Disney for 2 years, they finally announced the releases of their dimensionalised animated classics “The Beauty and the Best” and “The Lion King”.
Walt Disney Animation Studios worked on this flicks because these were the firsts of their drawn full features to be all mastered digitally with a program made by Pixar in the eighties (named CAPS). They had all the original animated files on a computer, so it was rather convenient for them to experiment with some new technique to create depth data into these flat pictures, of course, the process was painstaking but from the test footage showed at pasts ShoWest conventions, it worked quite well.
However, instead of releasing these films on theaters, they are going straight to the blu-ray 3D market. I don’t know if this is a smart choice, but at least they are releasing them to the masses..
They are set to be released this fall.

Toshiba Qosmio F750 3D – Laptop displaying 3D without glasses

So it appears that Toshiba just showed a new laptop with a display that shows 3D without glasses to a few lucky journalists in London today.
The Toshiba Qosmio F750 features a 15.6 inches glass-free 3D lenticular display. It has a HD webcam that tracks the face of the user and it tweak the position of the lenticular glass so that the 3D effect doesn’t break.
It also plays 2D content and inside the computer is embedded a software to convert that content into 3D.
But mostly, this laptop is equipped of some beasty specifications: Intel Core i7 processor, 6GB of RAM, 640GB hard-disk drive, Nvidia GeForce GT 540M graphic card, Harman Kardon stereo speakers, Dolby Advanced Audio, Blu-ray XL drive (it lets you burn double layers blu-ray discs), Wi-Fi, 4 USB drives, HDMI and Bluetooth 3.0.
This amazing piece of technology will be released this August in the UK for £1,300.
Still, no words on US availability.
But now if you want to enjoy 3D movies on the go, you can with this. Can’t wait to get me one of these!
